One of the earliest decisions we made as a company was that shipping would not be a profit center. We looked at various tables: fixed order amount/fixed shipping cost, zones, quadrants (east/west/north/south), etc…. None of them were fair for our customers or us. We decided to not automatically calculate shipping at time of sale but pull, pack & then calculate actual cost + one dollar for handling (labor, packing material, labels, etc). We used this method for many years. We were one of the first Viaweb (now Yahoo Shopping) stores. Unfortunately time marches on and we have found that customers have become used to having their on-line shopping stores tell them up front how much the shipping costs will be (even if that method is unfair to the customer). We have been forced by the negative comments, to switch to automatic calculation. Unfortunately, Yahoo Shopping doesn't offer any calculator other than the UPS rate card. Currently we show you your specific shipping cost at time of purchase ( using UPS domestic rates). However, we will still ship all packages under 5 lbs via the United States Postal Service because it is faster.
